Popular comedian and actor, Debo Adedayo, aka Mr Macaroni, has continued to state that he had no regrets being part of the #OccupyLekki protesters.
Recall that the entertainer and some other protesters were arrested while they were protesting at the Lekki toll gate, where they demanded that justice should be done for the victims of the October 20, 2020 #EndSARS protests.
In an interview, Mr Macaroni said, “I have no regrets. Any decision I take would be because I am solely convinced about it. This is me and who I will continue to be. I cannot be silenced. I hate being cheated and I hate it when people around me are being cheated.
If the government is not doing well, the least we can do is to lend our voices and call out that government. If they choose to oppress and dehumanise us while doing that, that is their cup of tea. But, we will continue to use our voices and actions to speak against injustice.”
Explaining why many of his comedy skits are now tilted towards addressing societal issues, Adedayo said, “My videos have always focused on societal issues. Perhaps, it is now looking like I am more visible.
That is me recognising that the God-given talent and platform I have, are to reflect what society looks like. I want to use my work of art to entertain, and at the same time, inform, educate and rejuvenate society.
That is what art is meant for. We are meant to speak with our voices and actions. Even in our works, we must be able to express the things we want the government to take note of.”
The comedian also stated that the support of fans was what kept him going. He added, “This is what I have always wanted to do, as far back as I can remember.
When I finally decided to explore this avenue, God blessed me with it and now, I am able to do a lot with my craft. I just have to keep going because this is what I love to do.
There are millions of people watching me and loving my craft. They always want to see more from me. Their comments, show of love and support have been my driving force to continue to do more.”
Speaking on why he shared the story of how Don Jazzy helped him on social media, Mr Macaroni said, “I am in the limelight and I find myself in a position where people come to me for help.
Anyone I can help, I always do. People like Don Jazzy have shown the way. Don Jazzy gives out things that would blow one’s mind. That time, I sent him a message on social media, telling him I needed money.
However, it was a lie. I just wanted money to do ‘rubbish’. But, he was kind enough and he gave me the money. I shared the story to let people know that I had been in that position before. I know what it feels like when people come to me for help.”
Asked what made him unique as a social media comedian, Mr Macaroni said, “I don’t think I am looking out for what makes me different from every other person.
What matters is who I am, as an actor and entertainer. I believe in love, truth and justice. That is who I am and in all my activities, that is what I project.”
