Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, implored senior pupils to stop bullying their junior ones, rather they should encourage and support them to be outstanding academically.

Sanwo-Olu made the appeal at the opening of a hostel and block of classrooms at Lagos State Model College, Ikorodu.

The governor, who commended the school’s pupils that participated in the last West Africa Examination Council examination for coming tops, said: “That is the kind of standard I want to see in our public schools.

You should all be well behaved. If there is any issue, you have your housemaster and teacher, escalate and tell them. If there is anything that is happening that is not supposed to be, say it out.

“Let us all stop bullying, we would not allow bullying in any of our schools. If you are in a senior school, you are not meant to bully your junior pupils. You are meant to encourage and support them.

You should never bully any students because they will also grow up to become senior students. So, say it out, if anybody is unnecessarily bullying. It is when you support each other that you will grow to become great students and citizens of this nation.”

He stated that effective teaching and learning could only take place in a conducive environment, and the goal is to keep providing the necessary pedagogical tools and infrastructure that teachers and students need to thrive.

“Our government is committed to providing quality and equitable education at all levels so that our students are able to achieve their dreams without being impeded by their birth circumstances.”

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, commended the governor for the sustained passion and significant contribution to the education sector in Lagos State.

“The newly built female hostel with a 182-bed capacity, house mistress quarters, 12-classroom block and other facilities will make teaching and learning conducive for students and their teachers.

“One interesting thing to note about the hostel is that at the upper part, there is a reading room for students to study after school hours and at the lower floor, we have a laundromat for the students to do their laundry.”

“The new-look structure of this school is bound to increase enrolment of students in this catchment area and help them develop their potentials.

There is so much more that we can talk about and the whole of the education family cannot thank Mr. Governor enough for his commitment to building an education sector that we all can be proud of,” the commissioner said.
